How Different Fandoms Respond to Hate
Awhile ago, when my wandering mind began to deeply focus on the depths of the books that literally form half our life today, I realized that, no matter how good a book was, there will always be someone who can find fault with it. I also came to the conclusion (especially inspired by the HP-Twilight battle) that each individual Fandom was unique in its response to hate from pansycakes, and was, to some degree, representative of the Fandom's influence on its various members. So I took upon myself a new identity (guess who?) and posted hate comments in various Fandoms. The response was, let's say, interesting.
Twilight
Disclaimer: I am not a Twihard.
In this list, I've included Fandoms I belong to, or am familiar with, to make it easier for me to relate to them; Twilight however, is an exception. I'll admit, I have watched the first movie, and one of my friends is a Twihard, so I do know some stuff, but really it's not my kind of a book.
Moving on, I made a hate post and sat back rather impatiently to see how the Fandom would respond. I didn't get a lot of reactions, and I have to say I was disappointed, but I the one's I did get were exactly as I had anticipated. Here's a couple:
I have to admit, the most offensive thing about this comment is the misinterpretation of my gender by the perpetrator. That attitude, though. (I do hope you don't mind me using your name.)
My favourite comment, however, was the one where this person attacked my religion based on my opinion. Unfortunately, in a burst of anger (which lasted about 5 minutes before turning into regret) I deleted that comment. Rest assured, it still stands at number one. Since I have no superior knowledge of Twilight, I invite Twilight fans to classify this however they wish.
Divergent
I haven't felt this kind of guilt since I dropped my iPad couple of years ago, and cracked the screen. It was bad enough trying to come up with an insult, then having the entire Fandom trying to exasperatedly explain to a sullen, stubborn child that different kids like different toys. As expected, there were quite a few Abnegation around, respecting my opinion, Erudite's why I was even there if I didn't like the books, some Candors, telling me what they thought of me, but very few Dauntless. Seems to me this Fandom has a higher level of tolerance. Here's a few
But here's what I found truly ironic:
I have no idea where that came from.
The Hunger Games
Highly disappointing. It appears no one gives a damn what you say about the Hunger Games, because no one even bothered acknowledging my post, let alone say anything. That may be either because they're carefree and know who they are, and realize they don't need to pay heed to what others say, or that they're completelyrics inactive. Seriously, I was hoping for at least an "if we burn, you burn with us" followed by various insults. Oh well.
Harry Potter
Since none of you had to carry out this "research," none of you will ever understand the struggle I went through to come up with something along the lines of hate. Once that task was accomplished, however, I am happy to say that this Fandom was the most active: quick in response, eager to hate back. Way to go, Potterheads!
The Slytherins were eager to have their opinions about me heard:
Then there were the Ravenclaws trying to talk some sense into me:
A few people wisely stated that I was an attention seeker, and they had best block me so they won't have to deal with me and my shit. Oh well.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the Hufflepuf's:
That last one had been flagged as spam by Google, I have no idea why, so don't blame me.
And, in its most literal sense, the lone Gryffindor:
You brave man.
And I'm going to classify these as the real Muggles. I'm sorry. But you made me do it.
I excluded your names. You're welcome. But much thanks to @Neharica Sahay, who pointed out that just because someone didn't like HP, did not mean they were Twihards.
Special thanks to moderator Steph, who goes by the username "I love Harry Potter," who blocked me the second she saw my post, to the great relief and admiration of the rest of the community. No hard feelings 😊.
All in all, this Fandom, by far, is the one who appears to care the most what other people think, based, I assume, on the idea that HP is the best (and I wholeheartedly agree). Forever ready to protect their honour (though in their own unique ways) and I love that.
I almost included LOTR and Sherlock Holmes here, but as it is, LOTR is so rich in history and detail, you can't come up with anything even if you wanted to, and well, it's best not to mess with Sherlock. I would've also included SPN, breaking my "books only" rule, because let's face it, any Fandom with a GIF for every single thing is worth it, but I still haven't watched more than 3 episodes of the first season (I know, I know) so I've decided to wait until I'm done.
I admit this article is missing some great fandoms, and as soon as I'v read the other books I still unbelievably haven't, I'll write another article. I don't have much else to do, anyway.
